Gunman was shot during hours-long standoff in West Columbia, police say<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nA Charleston man was arrested on multiple charges, including attempted murder, after he opened fire on law enforcement officers Tuesday, according to the West Columbia Police Department.<\/p>\n

In addition to the attempted murder charge, 34-year-old Russell Saylor was charged with discharging a firearm into a vehicle, two counts of discharging a firearm into a dwelling, three counts of malicious injury to personal property, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, police said Wednesday in a news release.<\/p>\n

Saylor shot at officers during a six-hour standoff at a hotel in Lexington County, according to the release.<\/p>\n

Saylor was shot in the lower body and was injured by a police dog when he was taken into custody, police said.<\/p>\n

The incident at the Hilton Garden Inn hotel at 110 McSwain Drive, near the Sunset Boulevard exit on Interstate 26, began at about 1 p.m., when police responded to a domestic violence call, according to the release.<\/p>\n

Officers on the scene spoke with the female involved and continued to the fifth floor to contact Saylor, police said. Saylor shut the door on the officers and told them that he was going to shoot them, according to the release.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Chicago police say they know who fatally shot a man outside a South Side liquor store and shot a woman who was sitting on a nearby CTA bus in December. But prosecutors refused to charge the suspect with shooting either person due to \u201cself-defense,\u201d according to court records and the man\u2019s defense attorney.<\/p>\n

Instead, Juan Ferba, 26, is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm \u2014 the gun officials say video footage shows him using to shoot both people.<\/p>\n

Chicago police arrested Ferba on Tuesday with plans to charge him with murder and attempted murder, according to a CPD arrest report. But a prosecutor in the Cook County State\u2019s Attorney\u2019s office \u201crejected the first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder charge for self-defense,\u201d a police supervisor wrote in the report.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nBrayden Jarrett says he was home from school last Tuesday, looking out the living room window, when he noticed a strange car parked sideways in his driveway.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe car stood in the driveway for a little bit, so I walked into our kitchen because we have a window in the kitchen and I looked out and I saw the dude and I\u2019ve never seen this dude in my life,\u201d said Jarrett.<\/p>\n

His mother was at work, but Jarrett, who is 16 years old, knew that she kept a 9mm handgun in the house and he knew where it was stored.<\/p>\n

He says he is familiar with guns, in part, because he has been hunting.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy gun is unloaded. The clip is next to it and he knows where it\u2019s at, so he grabbed it and he held onto both pieces and he stood in this (living room) doorway,\u201d said Ashleigh Jarrett, his mother.<\/p>\n

Brayden said he stood there watching the door as the outside door opened. He knew if it was a delivery service dropping off a package that they would leave it there.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
