\nA Louisiana mom who shot dead a home intruder early Sunday morning had woken up to find the ex-con with a shovel and wrench in her bedroom, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Robert Rheams, 51, entered a Hammond home before 5 a.m. Sunday, walked past a child sleeping on the living room sofa and into a bedroom where the homeowner slept, a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n

A “physical altercation” broke out when the mother of two woke up, said Jimmy Travis, the sheriff’s office chief of operations.<\/p>\n

“In fear of her safety and her children, she was able to retrieve a handgun where she fired one shot, striking the home intruder,” Travis said in a phone interview on Tuesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nA man who was attacking a woman with a knife was fatally shot by Putnam County sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday morning, police said.<\/p>\n

In a news release, Putnam County Sheriff Kevin J. McConville said police officers from the town of Kent initially responded at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday to a domestic violence incident involving an apparent abduction.<\/p>\n

McConville said the sheriff’s office sent deputies to back up the officers, and all law enforcement agencies in the county were notified of what was happening.<\/p>\n

The suspect’s vehicle was located by sheriff’s deputies in the town of Southeast, and the suspect, who was not identified by the sheriff, was seen using a knife to violently assault a woman.<\/p>\n

McConville did not say what, if any, relationship there was between the man and the woman.<\/p>\n

McConville said that in order to save the woman, the deputies used deadly physical force to stop the man’s assault.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
