Darris Beach, 78, discovered that something was not right with his bank account.\u00a0 Turning to his neighbor, Bill Price, Beach asked for help. They both went to the bank, where Price discovered that $60,000 was missing from the veteran’s account. This amount appeared to be Beach’s life savings. The suspect, John Stephenson, was later charged for exploitation and theft. Stephenson is a self-proclaimed preacher.<\/p>\n

From Fox 19:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDarius called me and told me he had some money missing out of his bank account and asked would I take him up to the bank and I said well sure,\u201d recalled Price.<\/p>\n

So, Price and Beach went to the Fifth Third in Union to see what was going on.<\/p>\n

When they got they, [sic<\/em>] Price says Beach discovered $60,000 was missing from his account.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, that was all of Darius\u2019s life savings that he had,\u201d Price explained. \u201cThat\u2019s what he was going to have to live on here because he can\u2019t work anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Price says Beach\u2019s health is in decline and he is in home hospice in Verona.<\/p>\n

According to the Boone County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Stephenson just happened to be at the courthouse Tuesday on an unrelated matter when a court official recognized him.<\/p>\n

Stephenson was led up to a courtroom on the second floor where a judge read the charges against him.<\/p>\n

Court records say Stephenson unlawfully obtained or used the financial resources of [Beach], who due to physical dysfunction \u201cwas unable to manage his own resources, carry out the activities of daily living or protect himself from exploitation without the assistance from others.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is unclear how Stephenson allegedly persuaded Beach to give him access to his finances.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess Darris, you know, didn\u2019t think anything about it because [Stephenson] was supposed to be a preacher,\u201d says Price.<\/p>\n

Price says Beach is now \u201cheartbroken,\u201d wondering why someone would do such a thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, he\u2019s dying and in hospice care, and for somebody to come in and take kind of [sic<\/em>] money from him, that\u2019s all he had,\u201d Price says. \u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable to think .somebody [sic<\/em>] would even do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephenson is expected back in court next week for his official arraignment.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Price says Beach just hopes to be able to recover some of the money that was allegedly stolen from him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
