{"id":134429,"date":"2022-12-07T06:00:18","date_gmt":"2022-12-07T11:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=134429"},"modified":"2022-12-05T16:01:22","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T21:01:22","slug":"state-u-wants-you-r-bets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=134429","title":{"rendered":"State U wants YOU&#8230;r bets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-134430 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/stadium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"248\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the New York Times, multiple US universities have partnered with on-line sports betting companies and at least a dozen\u00a0 have signed deals with brick-and-mortar casinos.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) says researchers estimate about three-quarters of college students gambled in the past year, and 6% have a gambling problem.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption-wrapper caption-aligned-with-image\">In 2018, the Supreme Court overturned a decision that limited sports betting to Nevada \u2014 and now 31 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized online or in-person betting, while five more have passed laws that will allow for it in the future.<\/div>\n<div class=\"caas-content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"caas-body\">\n<p>The relaxation in rules has apparently extended over to higher education institutions as well of late \u2014 online betting company Caesars Sportsbook struck a whopping $8.4 million dollar deal with Michigan State University last year, reports The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>And the University of Colorado Boulder reportedly collects $30 every time someone uses the university\u2019s promotional code to download the PointsBet gambling app and starts betting.<\/p>\n<p>Whyte has also said that his organization believes the growth of online gambling, including sports betting, has exacerbated the severity and rate of gambling problems, citing a 45% increase in gambling hotline calls and a 100% increase in text and chat communications in the first year after the Supreme Court decision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"caas-content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"caas-body\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/freakin-idiots-dave-ramsey-just-140000783.html\">Yahoo News\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>Sorry, the Times is behind a paywall so I had to reference Dave Ramsey&#8217;s rant on the subject.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"style__ArticleBlock-sc-71527cc7-4 bNdoDO\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"sc-ipEyDJ fMegQw\">Sports betting apps are trying to become more of a mainstay on college campuses than Jimmy John\u2019s, raising fears that students will be more focused on Michigan +200 than Econ 200.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-ipEyDJ fMegQw\">Apps have made inroads. At least seven schools, including LSU, the University of Maryland, and the University of Colorado, have inked ad deals with sports betting companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-15\/gambling-on-march-madness-concern-grows-as-apps-target-college-students\">Bloomberg reported<\/a>. At LSU, the athletic department has even sent emails to students pushing sports wagering (subject line: \u201c$300 in Free Bets Await\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"style__ArticleBlock-sc-71527cc7-4 bNdoDO\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morningbrew.com\/daily\/stories\/2022\/03\/17\/colleges-and-sports-betting-companies-make-a-likely-duo\">Morning Brew<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, just what young financially dumb kids need: &#8220;Well, we raised tuitions sky high.
