Richard Fierro, a 14- or 15-year Army vet (news accounts vary) displayed commendable cojones at the\u00a0 Q nightclub shooting in Colorado Springs last week, grabbing one of the shooter’s guns and from the description striking said shooter about the head and body till he stopped.<\/p>\n

He said he grabbed the suspect’s pistol from him and began “wailing” (sic) on him and beating him while telling a bystander to get the gun the suspect had been using away. The suspect used a legally purchased assault-style rifle, according to officials briefed on the investigation.<\/p>\n

“I told him I was going to kill him,” Fierro said. He asked a drag performer to kick the suspect, he said, adding that she stomped the suspect’s face with her high heel.<\/p>\n

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department and the mayor’s office, the suspect was beaten so severely that he remains hospitalized as of Monday night.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Fierro was in the U.S. Army for 14 years and served in Iraq three times and Afghanistan once, Army spokesperson Sgt. Pablo Saez told ABC News.

Fierro told reporters that he and his family were at Club Q to watch his daughter’s junior prom date perform in the drag show that night.

Said date was one of those killed in the shooting. Fierro credits his Army training for prompting his actions. As I mentioned to AW1Ed when we did the story on the unarmed security guard who tackled an active shooter – being armed with only a big, brass set (and maybe a high heel) does occasionally work.<\/p>\n

T’other end of the spectrum – a 23-year Marine and Air Force veteran John Doe is suing the military to get transgender surgery for his\u00a0 ‘daughter’.<\/p>\n

“I just want what others who have served their country want \u2014 the ability to take care of my family,” the father said in a statement. “My family has served right alongside me. My wife and I want our daughter to be healthy and happy like any parents would. My daughter shouldn’t be denied the healthcare she needs just because she’s transgender.”<\/p>\n

His daughter, identified as Jane Doe, is a transgender woman who is a college student and remains on his health plan.<\/p>\n

The father and daughter are challenging a 1976 statute that excludes coverage for transgender dependents’ medically necessary care. They say Section 1079 of the U.S. military medical code violates their constitutional rights to equal protection and due process, as well as the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination in federal programs.<\/p>\n
