RYAN MORGAN<\/strong><\/p>\n On the heels of the U.S. Army\u2019s historic recruiting miss in the 2022 fiscal year, the service\u2019s leaders are consistently blaming everyone but themselves for the shortfall.<\/p>\n In a Wednesday panel discussion during the CNBC Work Summit, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth pointed to a range of problems hurting the Army\u2019s recruiting efforts, including obesity, a competitive jobs market and even worried parents. Speaking to CNBC\u2019s Morgan Brennan, Wormuth said the decline in the number of Americans that can meet Army standards is one of the two biggest problems the service faces for recruiting.<\/p>\n \u201cOnly about 23 between of kids between 16 and 21 are able to meet our standards, and some of that, frankly, is reflective of the problem that we have in our country with obesity,\u201d Wormuth said. \u201cAnd so, some of that, frankly, is reflective of the problem that we have in our country with obesity.\u201d<\/p>\n While Wormuth\u2019s comments attribute the recruiting shortfall to America\u2019s obesity problems, the obesity problems have been around for years without the Army missing its recruiting goals like it did this year. The other U.S. military branches, which also have to contend with America\u2019s weight problems, struggled with recruiting but did not experience as large of a miss as the Army did this year.<\/p>\n Wormuth further listed \u201cbehavioral health or misconduct\u201d as contributing factors in the Army\u2019s recruiting woes, which again are problems all military branches would have to contend with. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n
