In a family outing reminiscent of NAACP Rachel ‘Soul Sistah’ Dolezal’s outing, Marie Louise Cruz has been ID’ed by her family as a pretender – you may know her better as Sacheen Littlefeather, the so-called Indian actress\/activist who declined Marlon Brando’s “Godfather” Oscar in 1973.<\/p>\n
Just weeks after<\/span> the death<\/a> of Sacheen Littlefeather<\/a> \u2014 the actress and activist who declined Marlon Brando\u2019s 1973 Oscar win for\u00a0The Godfather\u00a0<\/em>on his behalf and was blacklisted in Hollywood \u2014 her biological sisters have revealed that she fabricated her Native American ancestry.<\/p>\n
The two sisters of Littlefeather (born Marie Louise Cruz) told the San Francisco Chronicle<\/em><\/a> that, despite Littlefeather\u2019s claims of being White Mountain Apache, their father was actually Mexican with no tribal identity; genealogical records also traced the Cruz family history to Mexico City with no known ties to the tribal nations there.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\nPart of the sisters\u2019 decision to come forward with Littlefeather\u2019s fraudulence was to rightfully honor their father, who Littlefeather painted as an abusive drunk in interviews, as well as embellished the family\u2019s poverty growing up; the sisters said it was in fact their father\u2019s father who was drunk and abusive, and Littlefeather took their father\u2019s harsh childhood and applied it to her own origin story.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a lie,\u201d Littlefeather\u2019s sister Trudy Orlandi told author Jacqueline Keeler. \u201cMy father was who he was. His family came from Mexico. And my dad was born in Oxnard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sister Rosalind Cruz added, \u201cIt is a fraud<\/a>. It\u2019s disgusting to the heritage of the tribal people. And it\u2019s just \u2026 insulting to my parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
And of course, her ancestry wasn’t the only lie: when she died at the age of 75 a couple of weeks back, much was made of her participating in the Indian protesters’ takeover of Alcatraz Island in 1969. That lasted for 18 months and unfortunately the folks who were there don’t seem to remember her presence. Maybe that wasn’t long enough to make an impression.<\/p>\n
\nHowever, LaNada Warjack, one of the student leaders for the duration of the 18-month occupation, told the San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> that Littlefeather was never part of the protest. \u201cWe never really knew her until the Oscar night,\u201d Warjack said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
