Several news outlets are reporting that a California man has pleaded guilty to scamming close to 20 people out of $1.5 Million dollars while falsely claiming he was a Navy SEAL.<\/p>\n

(Tribune News Service) \u2014\u00a0A\u00a0California\u00a0man faces up to 30 years in prison for a romance scam in which he stole $1.5 million from nearly 20 victims, federal officials reported.<\/p>\n

Ze\u2019Shawn Stanley Campbell, 35, of Irvine falsely told them he was a millionaire business owner and investor who had fought in Iraq and Afghanistan as a U.S. Navy SEAL, the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for Central California said in a news release.<\/p>\n

He pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering Monday, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

Campbell convinced 10 people, some of whom he developed romantic relationships with, and nine companies to send him hundreds of thousands of dollars between 2014 and 2020, the release said.<\/p>\n

He told them he owned\u00a0McDonald\u2019s\u00a0franchises, gyms and a security company, prosecutors said. He also claimed to be a Bitcoin and real estate investor.<\/p>\n

Campbell told victims he would invest their money for them or that he needed it for medical expenses, the release said.<\/p>\n

Instead, he spent it on luxuries for himself, including a\u00a0BMW\u00a0and a\u00a0Mercedes Benz, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

He will face up to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced, which is scheduled for January.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Once again, they tend to go after fraud vs. stolen valor.\u00a0 To be fair, the Stolen Valor Act does not cover a claim of being a Navy SEAL although most of us would consider that to be stolen valor.\u00a0 However, medals and claims of combat put someone in direct conflict with the Stolen Valor Act of 2013.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
