PETA has asked Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to stop doing decompression sickness testing on sheep.<\/p>\n

In a letter sent Thursday<\/a> to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, the nonprofit People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals asked the Pentagon\u2019s leader to \u201cend the U.S. Navy\u2019s support of horrific decompression sickness\/illness (DCS\/DCI) and oxygen toxicity tests on animals.\u201d This follows a similar letter the organization sent to Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n

\u201cPETA is calling on Secretary of Defense Austin to switch to superior, human-relevant research instead of sinking money and animals\u2019 lives into archaic tests.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At my most generous interpretation, the spokesperson is asking for research to end because it isn’t relevant? I am guessing some of your Navy (or even sport) divers can let us know if\u00a0 ‘the bends’ has been solved and is no longer a threat – I certainly missed that item.<\/p>\n

At worst, they seem to be advocating we do our research on people (“human relevant” is a bit slippery).
