We\u00a0might\u00a0<\/em>have overestimated the Russians’ ability to wage war if it comes to calling in the under-fed soldiers of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to help in their war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Australian Daily Telegraph<\/a> has the story;<\/p>\n

Up to 100,000 North Korean soldiers could be sent to bolster Vladimir Putin\u2019s forces fighting Ukraine, according to Russian reports.<\/p>\n

A leading defence expert in Moscow, reserve colonel Igor Korotchenko, told state TV: \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t be shy in accepting the hand extended to us by Kim Jong-un.\u201d<\/p>\n

North Korea has made it clear through \u201cdiplomatic channels\u201d that as well as providing builders to repair war damage, it is ready to supply a vast fighting force, reported Regnum news agency.<\/p>\n

They would be deployed to the forces of the separatist pro-Putin Donetsk People\u2019s Republic [DPR] and Luhansk People\u2019s Republic [LPR], both of which Kim has recently recognised as independent countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe country is ready to transfer up to 100,000 of its soldiers to Donbas,\u201d said the report by the pro-Kremlin news agency.<\/p>\n

\u201cPyongyang will be able to transfer its tactical units to Donbas.\u201d<\/p>\n

In return, grain and energy would be supplied to Kim\u2019s stricken economy.<\/p>\n

The claim was seized on by Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of Russia\u2019s National Defence journal on Rossiya 1 channel, who said: \u201cThere are reports that 100,000 North Korean volunteers are prepared to come and take part in the conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was challenged on whether they could be volunteers from North Korea where total obedience is required.<\/p>\n

But he said North Korean people were \u201cresilient and undemanding\u201d and \u201cthe most important thing is they are motivated\u201d.<\/p>\n

He told viewers: \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t be shy in accepting the hand extended to us by Kim Jung-un\u2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf North Korean volunteers with their artillery systems, wealth of experience with counter battery warfare and large calibre multiple launch rocket systems, made in North Korea, want to participate in the conflict, well let\u2019s give the green light to their volunteer impulse.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIf North Korea expresses a desire to meet its international duty to fight against Ukrainian fascism, we should let them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
