The World Health Organization (WHO) has activated its highest alert level for the growing monkeypox outbreak, declaring the virus a public health emergency of international concern.<\/p>\n

This designation means the WHO now views the outbreak as significant enough a threat to global health that a coordinated international response is needed to prevent the virus from spreading further and potentially escalating into a pandemic.<\/p>\n

The declaration does not impose requirements on national governments, it serves as a warning and a call for action.<\/p>\n

Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra on Thursday said he was declaring a public health emergency over the monkeypox outbreak. <\/p>\n

“In light of evolving circumstances on the ground, I am declaring a public health emergency on #monkeypox,” Becerra said in a statement. “We are prepared to take our response to the next level in addressing this virus and we urge every American to take monkeypox seriously.”<\/p>\n

The monkeypox outbreak has infected more than 6,600 Americans. The emergency declaration frees up federal money and other resources to fight the virus, which may cause fever, body aches, chills, fatigue and pimple-like bumps on many parts of the body. A public health emergency can be extended, similar to what happened during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Some 16,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported across more than 70 countries so far this year, according to WHO data. Five deaths from the virus have been reported in Africa. Men who have sex with men are currently the predominate disease vector.<\/p>\n
