A heckler interrupted Joe Biden in the middle of a gun control related speech. Biden told the heckler to sit down as the heckler would hear what Biden was saying before he was heckled. It was unclear, to the article writer, what the heckler said. However, prior to the event, the heckler posted a tweet criticizing the event. The heckler was the father of one of the victims of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida.<\/p>\n

It’s not clear exactly what Oliver said during the event, which was held in the South Lawn of the White House.<\/p>\n

“The word CELEBRATION has no space in a society that saw 19 kids massacred just a month ago,” Oliver tweeted before the commemoration. “‘Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.’ Not me, not Joaquin.”<\/p>\n

Biden paused during his remarks when Oliver’s interruption began and attempted to get him to relent before the man was removed.<\/p>\n

“Sit down you’ll hear what I have to say,” Biden said.<\/p>\n

“We have one. Let me finish my comment. Let me talk,” Biden added, before the event continued after a brief, but rare, interruption on White House grounds.<\/p>\n

Hecklers or protestors during a presidential speech are rare due to strict security measures at the White House. A protestor in 2006 interrupted an event with former President George W. Bush and then-Chinese President Hu Jintao, earning her criminal charges.<\/p>\n

Dozens of members of Congress attended the event Monday, including Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who led negotiations on behalf of Republicans. Cornyn managed to get 14 total Senate Republicans to vote for the bill, clearing the chamber’s filibuster threshold.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
