In the majority opinion for the Supreme Court’s ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen<\/em>, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the Second Amendment protects an \u201cindividual\u2019s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this case, petitioners and respondents agree that ordinary, law-abiding citizens have a similar right to carry handguns publicly for their self-defense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas observed, \u201cWe too agree, and now hold, consistent with Heller and McDonald, that the Second and Fourteenth Amendments protect an individual\u2019s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Biden is “deeply disappointed” with a Supreme Court gun decision that struck down a New York law restricting access to concealed carry permits Thursday.<\/p>\n

Biden released the statement hours after the Supreme Court released its decision. The New York law had required permit applicants to provide specific reasons for needing a firearm. <\/p>\n

“Since 1911, the State of New York has required individuals who would like to carry a concealed weapon in public to show a need to do so for the purpose of self-defense and to acquire a license,” Biden wrote. “More than a century later, the United States Supreme Court has chosen to strike down New York\u2019s long-established authority to protect its citizens.”<\/p>\n

“I urge states to continue to enact and enforce commonsense laws to make their citizens and communities safer from gun violence,” he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
