{"id":126327,"date":"2022-05-29T13:21:35","date_gmt":"2022-05-29T17:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=126327"},"modified":"2022-05-29T13:21:35","modified_gmt":"2022-05-29T17:21:35","slug":"another-three-are-accounted-for-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=126327","title":{"rendered":"Another Three Are Accounted For"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DPAA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dpaa-mil.sites.crmforce.mil\/dpaaRecentlyAccountedFor\"><i>\u201cRecently Accounted For\u201d webpage<\/i><\/a> and\/or recent press releases indicate that the following formerly-missing US personnel have been accounted for.<\/p>\n<p><b><u>From World War II<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>S1c William Brooks<\/b>, US Navy, assigned to the crew of the <i>USS Oklahoma<\/i>, was lost at Pearl Harbor, HI, on 7 December 1941.  His accounting was announced on 23 May 2022.  (see note) <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>SSG Michael Uhrin<\/b>, US Army, assigned to the 369th Bombardment Squadron, 306th Bombardment Group, 40th Combat Wing, 8th Air Force, was lost IVO Rommelhausen and Langenbergheim, Germany, on 14 October 1943.  His accounting was announced on 23 May 2022. <\/p>\n<p><b><u>From Korea<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>SFC James A. Coleman<\/b>, US Army, assigned to I Company, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, was lost IVO Hwach-on Reservoir, South Korea on 25 April 1951.  His accounting was announced on 26 May 2022. <\/p>\n<p><b><u>From Southeast Asia<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>None<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Welcome back, elder brothers-in-arms. Our apologies that your return took so long.<\/p>\n<p>Rest easy.  You\u2019re home now. <\/p>\n<p><strong>. . .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 72,000 US personnel remain unaccounted for from World War II; over 7,500 US personnel remain unaccounted for from the Korean War; and over 1,500 remain unaccounted for in Southeast Asia (SEA).  Additionally, 126 US personnel remain unaccounted for from the Cold War; 5 remain unaccounted for from the Gulf Wars; and 1 individual remains unaccounted for from Operation Eldorado Canyon. <\/p>\n<p>Comparison of DNA from recovered remains against DNA from some (but not all) blood relatives can assist in making a positive ID for unidentified remains that have already been recovered.  The same is true for remains which may be recovered in the future.  <\/p>\n<p>On their web site&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/Contact\/ContactUs.aspx\"><em>Contact Us<\/em><\/a> page DPAA now has FAQs. The answer to one of those FAQs describes who can and cannot submit DNA samples useful in identifying recovered remains. The chart giving the answer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/portals\/85\/Images\/DNA.jpg\"><em>can be viewed here<\/em><\/a>. The text associated with the chart is short and is found in one of the FAQs.<\/p>\n<p>If your family lost someone in one of these conflicts who has not yet been accounted for and you qualify to submit a DNA sample, please arrange to submit one. By doing that you just might help identify the remains of a US service member who\u2019s been repatriated but not yet been identified \u2013 as well as a relative of yours, however distant. Or you may help to identify remains to be recovered in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody deserves a proper burial. That\u2019s especially true for those who gave their all while serving this nation. <\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><i><u>Author\u2019s Note<\/u>:  S1c Brooks was accounted for in March 2021.  However, his accounting was apparently not publicly announced until this past week (the date above is from the <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/News-Releases\/PressReleaseArticleView\/Article\/3040168\/uss-oklahoma-sailor-accounted-for-from-world-war-ii-brooks-w\/\">DPAA press release announcing his accounting<\/a><i>).
