Armed man in bank shot dead by police. They say he wasn’t a robber.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nROMEOVILLE, Ill. — A man stormed into a bank branch in this Chicago suburb, started shooting and took hostages Tuesday afternoon, only to be shot dead by police, CBS Chicago reports.<\/p>\n

But they say he wasn’t robbing the bank.<\/p>\n

The drama unfolded at the Fifth Third Bank, beginning at 3:40 p.m.<\/p>\n

Bank employees were ordered to call 911 by the armed man, authorities said. Dispatch audio also indicated he requested a chair be placed front of the door.<\/p>\n

Romeoville police came to the scene after getting the call.<\/p>\n

“It was chaos out here today,” said Lisa Coleman, who lives nearby.<\/p>\n

The Will County Sheriff’s office SWAT team, which also responded, kept Coleman and neighbors away.<\/p>\n

“I came out and I saw the two SWATs standing over here with a rifle on them. It was very scary, because it’s too close to home,” Coleman said. “This is happening way too close.”<\/p>\n

The gunman never asked for money, authorities said. He barked orders at gunpoint and fired off several rounds but never shot anyone.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nAn alleged one-man crime spree came to a screeching halt before dawn Saturday, interrupted by an alert Arco resident who called police after spotting him fiddling with her vehicle’s door handles, according to Glynn County Police.<\/p>\n

Responding police established a perimeter around Poplar and Cahoon streets, after which county police dog Roxy flushed the alleged suspect out of hiding in a thick residential hedge, according to the police report.<\/p>\n

Police arrested Roger Elliot Singleton III and charged him with four counts each of entering a vehicle to commit a felony and possession of tools to commit such a crime.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Singleton was wanted by county police on warrants for battery and criminal trespass, as well as a third warrant from the county sheriff’s office for failure to appear in court.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
