UPDATE-CLEVELAND POLICE OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just after 10 am Monday a male appeared at Martin Chevrolet in Cleveland and began waving a gun around telling employees to give him keys. Cleveland Police were called.<\/p>\n

A Cleveland Police unit arrived on the scene as the suspect was getting into a vehicle. That officer ordered the suspect to stop which he refused and fled from Martin Chevrolet. A pursuit was initiated involving Cleveland officers.<\/p>\n

DPS and Liberty County units then became involved as the vehicle traveled north on 59 to Goodrich, Texas at speeds over 100 miles per hour. The vehicle then u-turned and came back through Cleveland. He continued south on I-69 to a point just south of Loop 105 Bypass where he was spiked.<\/p>\n

The vehicle then cut into the construction area almost hitting several construction workers. He continued north a short distance at a high rate of speed where he ran off the new pavement onto the dirt below causing him to crash. He then exited the vehicle with a gun in hand and fled east toward the northbound lanes of traffic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nDespite protest from the decedent’s family, the prosecutor ruled the case “valid self defense.”<\/em><\/p>\n

MINNEAPOLIS \u2014 It was a case that had a lot of people talking \u2014 a south Minneapolis homeowner and her son shot and killed a man in their backyard who tried getting into their home.<\/p>\n

Surveillance video and police reports obtained by KARE 11 through a data request add context to what happened, and why the Hennepin County Attorney ultimately decided not to file charges in the case.<\/p>\n

The shooting happened in February on a cold, 6-degree night in south Minneapolis in a neighborhood that had seen an increase in armed robberies.<\/p>\n

After checking the locked gate, surveillance video outside the home shows Martin Lee Johnson hopping the fence.<\/p>\n

A motion light turns on as Johnson approaches the house.
\nAccording to police reports, the homeowner, a 53-year-old woman, heard Johnson “wiggle the door handle” and his steps on the deck, so she told her 26-year-old son who lives with her, and grabbed her handgun as Johnson entered the family’s detached garage.<\/p>\n

The homeowner opened the sliding door and fired warning shots in the air.<\/p>\n

“Get the (expletive) out of my garage, now!” she screamed in between gunshots.<\/p>\n

On the surveillance video, you can hear the homeowner’s son’s voice as he joins her in yelling at the intruder.<\/p>\n

“Get the (expletive) out,” they both yell as Johnson walks out of the garage door.<\/p>\n

Johnson appears to look toward the fence momentarily before walking toward the mother and son. The surveillance camera is positioned right above the sliding door where they stood, pointed right at Johnson.<\/p>\n

“No, go the other way,” the woman yelled.
\nBut instead of hopping back over the fence, Johnson walked toward them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
