{"id":12179,"date":"2009-07-03T07:25:54","date_gmt":"2009-07-03T12:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=12179"},"modified":"2009-07-03T07:25:54","modified_gmt":"2009-07-03T12:25:54","slug":"trial-for-brit-embassy-staff-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=12179","title":{"rendered":"Trial for Brit embassy staff in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Looking for someone to blame for unrest after their June 12th election riots, Iranians are putting some of the UK embassy staff on trial according to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/middle_east\/8132397.stm\">the BBC<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Guardians Council chief Ahmad Jannati said: &#8220;Naturally they will be put on trial, they have made confessions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nine embassy staff were held in Tehran last weekend. Britain says all but two have now been freed.<\/p>\n<p>EU governments are considering temporarily withdrawing ambassadors to Iran in protest at the detentions. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Ayatollah Jannati did not say how many employees would be tried or on what charges. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotsman.com\/world\/British-embassy-staff-in-Iran.5427523.jp\">Scotsman<\/a> reports that Jannati claimed the staff member(s) made confessions.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/world\/europe\/article6629514.ece\">Times Online<\/a>, government a spokesman denied the legitimacy of the allegations;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Foreign Office spokesman denied that embassy staff took any part in demonstrations and demanded more information from Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very concerned by these reports and are investigating,\u201d a spokesman said. \u201cAllegations that our staff were involved in fomenting unrest are wholly without foundation. We will be seeking an urgent explanation from the Iranians.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, Iranians are still languishing in prisons for their parts in the protests. Popular former president Mohammad Khatami spoke out on their behalf, as quoted in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/03\/world\/middleeast\/03iran.html\">New York Times<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mr. Khatami called the election \u201ca coup against the republicanism of the system,\u201d and warned, \u201cDo not think that suppressing the protests would put an end to them.
