\nMontgomery County police officers fatally shot a man who opened fire on them during a traffic stop in Silver Spring early Wednesday, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Four officers were involved and have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, while the incident is investigated by a newly created unit in the Maryland Attorney General\u2019s Office<\/strong> intended to handle officer-involved shootings. The incident appears to have stemmed from a shooting several blocks away in downtown Silver Spring that did not involve the police. The victim in the downtown shooting is expected to survive. \nOrlando Police Department officers shot a 35-year-old man armed with a gun who entered an innocent bystander\u2019s vehicle while fleeing police at a Metro West area apartment complex early Wednesday, officials said.<\/p>\n

OPD Deputy Chief Eric Smith told reporters that officers responded just before 1 a.m. to multiple calls from the Vista Verde apartments on Hiawassee Road about a \u201csuspicious person knocking on windows.\u201d<\/p>\n

Callers also reported possible gunshots, Smith said.<\/p>\n

Officers arrived to find the suspect, later identified as Steffan Haskins, walking through the parking lot, but he soon took off running, Smith said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey caught up to him as he started to get into somebody\u2019s vehicle,\u201d Smith said. \u201cThe vehicle was driving into the parking lot [and] he jumped into the passenger side of that vehicle.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Off-duty Chicago officer shoots man amid exchange of gunfire<\/strong><\/p>\n

CHICAGO (AP) \u2014 An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and critically wounded a man during an exchange of gunfire after the man tried to rob him on the city’s South Side, police said.<\/p>\n

The man approached the officer about 5:45 p.m. Monday in the Calumet Heights neighborhood and tried the rob the officer, said Tom Ahern, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.<\/p>\n

The two exchanged gunfire and the man was hit, Ahern said. Fire officials said he was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
