{"id":119493,"date":"2021-11-13T10:47:17","date_gmt":"2021-11-13T15:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=119493"},"modified":"2021-11-13T10:47:17","modified_gmt":"2021-11-13T15:47:17","slug":"new-jersey-gets-tougher-on-stolen-valor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=119493","title":{"rendered":"New Jersey Gets Tougher on Stolen Valor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/NJ-SV.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-119494 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/NJ-SV-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/NJ-SV-300x245.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/NJ-SV-407x333.jpg 407w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/NJ-SV.jpg 756w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several recent articles say that the state of New Jersey has made a commitment to get tougher on Stolen Valor.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wobm.com\/shore-assemblyman-wants-tougher-penalties-on-anyone-impersonating-military-personnel\/?utm_source=tsmclip&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Shore Assemblyman wants tougher penalties on anyone impersonating military personnel<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As troubling of a trend as it is from time to time, people impersonating military personnel for personal gain continues to happen.<\/p>\n<p>There are penalties already on the books for those inclined to commit such a heinous crime.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, then Governor Chris Christie signed a law which sends people to prison and forces them to pay a big fine for\u00a0anyone who impersonates military personnel to receive the perks that veterans and active members receive,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/2015\/10\/stiffer_penalties_for_impersonating_veterans_now_n.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to a report by NJAdvanceMedia<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidernj.com\/press-release\/committee-passes-murphy-measure-upgrading-crimes-falsely-claiming-veterans-us-armed-forces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Committee Passes Murphy Measure Upgrading Crimes for Those Falsely Claiming to be Veterans of US Armed Forces<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>November 8, 2021<\/p>\n<p>(TRENTON) \u2013 To deter the illegal act of falsely claiming to be a veteran of the United States Armed Forces, Assembly Democrat Carol Murphy (D-Burlington) sponsors legislation to upgrade the crimes for those who misrepresent themselves as a member or veteran of the United States Armed Forces or organized militia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The bill (<a href=\"https:\/\/gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.njleg.state.nj.us%2F2020%2FBills%2FA1500%2F1121_I1.HTM&amp;data=04%7C01%7CKMartinez%40njleg.org%7C54a525ab6bf74239122008d9a2c99d43%7C9b56b025a9574da5882e4cc045cbe25b%7C0%7C0%7C637719809066223957%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=t5jKxybC5rmWkH%2F5G0%2BNLsjW3FSFcyAAQfxeLM9X%2Flo%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">A-1121<\/a>) would upgrade these crimes to a second degree if the actor obtains money, property, or other tangible benefits of $75,000 or more.\u00a0 A crime of the second degree would be punishable by five to ten years imprisonment, up to a $150,000 fine, or both.\u00a0 If the actor obtains money, property, or other tangible benefits less than $75,000, then the crime would remain as a crime of the third degree, subject to a minimum fine of $1,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Upon the Assembly Military and Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee approval of the measure, Assemblywoman Murphy issued the following statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i>\u201cCurrent and former members of our military have protected and served our country to earn their much-deserved benefits.
