At a White House presser yesterday, a well rested US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was asked by White House correspondent April Ryan to “…give us the construct on how you will deconstruct the racism that was built into the roadways?\u201d<\/p>\n
Ahh, what? This question would have frozen any normal person to the spot, trying to process an answer that doesn’t include laughter.<\/p>\n
Fortunately Sec. Pete was able to answer at length and with conviction.<\/p>\n
Flush with cash from the new infrastructure bill, US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg pledged to address the \u2018racism\u2019 that went into the building of America\u2019s roads and bridges, by either tearing them down or building anew.<\/p>\n
Buttigieg spoke to the White House press corps on Monday, explaining how President Joe Biden\u2019s \u2018Justice40\u2019 agenda would apply to \u201cequity\u201d in infrastructure, delivering at least 40% of the benefits to \u201cdisadvantaged communities.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCan you give us the construct of how you will deconstruct the racism that was built into the roadways? …Can you talk to us about how that could be deconstructed?\u201d asked April Ryan, formerly affiliated with CNN but currently with the African-American publication The Grio.<\/p>\n
While her question prompted ridicule from some politicians \u2013 such as Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) \u2013 Buttigieg agreed wholeheartedly.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a highway was built for the purpose of dividing a white and a black neighborhood, or if an underpass was constructed such that a bus carrying mostly Black and Puerto Rican kids to a beach… in New York was designed too low for it to pass by, that that obviously reflects racism that went into those design choices,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
