The <a href=\"https:\/\/starherald.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/nebraska-veterans-plan-honors-for-civil-war-soldier-whose-remains-lay-unclaimed-for-105-years\/article_8ea80afc-ce02-5a3c-ac89-04a6bb75a624.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Star Herald reports<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cynthia Vest Kinkead has rested alone beneath a white headstone in her family\u2019s large burial plot near the east entrance to Plattsmouth\u2019s Oak Hill Cemetery ever since her death, in 1910.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s about to get some company in that lonely patch of grass.<\/p>\n<p>Later this month, her husband, Civil War veteran Benton Kinkead, will be laid to rest beside her \u2014 just a few weeks after the unlikely discovery of his cremated remains in a Seattle funeral home 105 years after his death.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s believed he will be the first Civil War soldier buried in Nebraska in almost 75 years.<\/p>\n<p>Kinkead, an Army private, fought for the Union forces to save the divided country more than 150 years ago, and was wounded in battle. On Oct. 30, he\u2019ll finally be buried with full military honors \u2014 the folded flag, the bugled taps, the rifle salute \u2014 honored by veterans whose grandparents weren\u2019t yet born when he performed his patriotic duty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a veteran. He\u2019s going to get a proper burial,\u201d said Kermit Reisdorph, an Air Force veteran and former Plattsmouth American Legion commander, who is helping plan the event.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Kinkead, 65, of Duvall, Washington, was stunned to get a call from Nebraska earlier this month about the discovery of the remains of a great-grandfather he barely knew existed. He is probably Benton Kinkead\u2019s closest living relative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell that\u2019s interesting!\u201d Bill Kinkead said of the discovery. \u201cI think he deserves to be put to rest. It\u2019s kind of interesting that he hadn\u2019t been.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We agree! Rest easy Private Kinkead.
