From a slow start 20 years ago, China has surged to rapidly catch up to the US in Artificial Intelligence (AI). From a research perspective, China has indeed become a world leader in AI publications and patents.<\/p>\n
Some are saying China has already won the AI war.<\/p>\n

China has won the artificial intelligence battle with the United States and is heading towards global dominance because of its technological advances, the Pentagon’s former software chief told the Financial Times.<\/p>\n
China, the world\u2019s second largest economy, is likely to dominate many of the key emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and genetics within a decade or so, according to Western intelligence assessments.<\/p>\n
Nicolas Chaillan, the Pentagon’s first chief software officer who resigned in protest against the slow pace of technological transformation in the U.S. military, said the failure to respond was putting the United States at risk.<\/p>\n
“We have no competing fighting chance against China in 15 to 20 years. Right now, it\u2019s already a done deal; it is already over in my opinion,” he told the newspaper. “Whether it takes a war or not is kind of anecdotal.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Mr. Chaillan has an impressive crystal ball. Is he right? Some perspective helps.<\/p>\n
AI is a different animal from other technologies due to its ‘open science’ nature, so much of the essential research on algorithms have become public knowledge- easily accessible. Technical maturity comes from users generating data and refining the product based on what is learned from that data. <\/p>\n
Also, published research papers make it easy to reverse engineer AI code and implement it. China excels at this, among even more egregious ethics violations.<\/p>\n
So is it game over for the US, as Mr. Chaillan opines? I rather doubt it. No one can predict what advances may come in the next 20 years. China’s current AI surge is buoyed by its abundant computer science and engineering talent, but on the backs of the real innovators.<\/p>\n
