Man Arrested For Assaulting Members of the Media in Lee-Ianau County<\/a><\/h3>\n

The Leelanau County Sheriff\u2019s Office says a man has been arrested after assaulting two members of the media.<\/div>\n

Deputies were responding to reports of a man causing a disturbance at Discovery Pier in Elmwood Township Thursday during a visit from Governor Gretchen Whitmer.<\/div>\n
.<\/span><\/div>\n
As deputies monitored the 39-year-old Traverse City man, they say he got into a heated verbal disagreement with another person.<\/div>\n

Their conversation was overheard by members of the media, who then went to observe.<\/div>\n
.<\/span><\/div>\n
Deputies say that shortly after the media arrived, the Traverse City man assaulted one member by forcefully grabbing a microphone out of her hand and throwing it.<\/div>\n

And as deputies were taking the man into custody, he spit on another member of the media.<\/div>\n

The Traverse City man now faces two counts of assault and battery and one county [sic] of malicious destruction of property.<\/div>\n

Man accused of making threatening calls speaks out about PTSD<\/a><\/h3>\n

TRAVERSE CITY \u2014 Michael Thomas Harrison says he wishes he had never joined the U.S. Army.<\/p>\n

Harrison, 39, who authorities say made threatening phone calls and assaulted two journalists, was released on house arrest Wednesday. He is wearing a GPS tether and has given his firearms to his father for safekeeping.<\/p>\n

He contacted the Record-Eagle shortly after his release, saying he wanted to explain his behavior. Harrison said he is 100 percent disabled with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of his time serving in Afghanistan while an infantryman.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not a threat to the local community,\u201d Harrison said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to hurt anyone. I want them not to be afraid of me and have a little empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says PTSD has destroyed his life. He\u2019s lost his job as a surgical technician because of it, he said, lost most of his friends and hasn\u2019t spoken to a brother in 10 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt controls me and I hate it,\u201d Harrison said. \u201cThat\u2019s the thing with PTSD \u2014 you react without thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harrison pleaded \u201cnot guilty\u201d May 18 to several misdemeanor charges of assault and battery, malicious destruction of property and malicious use of a telecommunication device in connection with incidents in Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties.<\/p>\n

Harrison did not deny making the phone calls, though he said they were not threatening.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been trying to get people\u2019s attention,\u201d he said. \u201cI think I went a little too far with some of the phone calls.\u201d<\/p>\n

At his arraignment last week Harrison wore a suicide vest. He said he was on a hunger and water strike because he was not being given the medications he is prescribed for PTSD. He was also going through withdrawal from those medications, he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Harrison said he is not a gun person and only owns two guns, one of which is a hunting rifle.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We may need to get a ruling on that.\u00a0 How many guns does one have to own before they are a “gun person?”<\/p>\n

I’m not really an adulterer because I only have two mistresses.\u00a0 In case you’re reading – just kidding, honey.<\/em><\/p>\n

If we can just do away with guns and PTSD, there would be no crime.\u00a0 That microphone din do nuttin’.<\/p>\n

Some day ol’ Michael will be in group therapy and someone will ask him “And how did that make you feel?”<\/p>\n
