President Biden gave a commencement speech yesterday to the Coast Guard’s newest officers at their Academy graduation. With echoes of his speech to deployed troops when he was Vice President, when he called them “stupid bastards” and “dull”<\/a>, he again insults the troops as “dull” when they didn’t laugh at his incoherent rambling “jokes(?)”.<\/p>\n He said, \u201cI can only assume that you will enjoy educating your family about how the Coast Guard is quote, \u2018the hard nucleus around [which] the Navy forms in times of war.” Since nobody knows what the hell he’s talking about, nobody laughed. Naturally, when confronted with an audience that doesn’t swoon over his every word, he insults them. \u201cYou are a \u2014 you are a really dull class. I mean, come on, man, is the sun getting to you? I would think you would have an opportunity when I say that about the Navy to clap.”<\/p>\n No idea why he expects the\u00a0COAST GUARD\u00a0<\/em>to clap after he references the\u00a0NAVY.\u00a0<\/em>He called (some might take it as an order) for the group to clap at least two other times. According to the New York Post<\/a>;<\/p>\n \u201cYou can clap, come on, man,\u201d Biden said when he joked about cadets spending \u201ctoo much time at the Slice,\u201d a local pizza parlor.<\/p>\n He again encouraged the crowd to clap when he praised the academy\u2019s Bravo Company for winning a football game against a rival set of cadets.<\/p>\n \u201cCongratulations the Bravo Company, by the way, on your victory. You can clap. It\u2019s okay. Even if you\u2019re lost, you gotta clap,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n Biden later said he would \u201cabsolve\u201d the graduates of any misdeeds from their time at the school.<\/p>\n The president told the cadets that as a University of Delaware student in the 1960s, he committed \u201cminor infractions like using a fire extinguisher to hose down an RA.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n In regards to Biden’s original comment, the Coast Guard under the Department of the Navy during a time of war. When they are brought under the Navy, the Coast Guard continues to act as a supplemental or auxiliary to the Navy. Not really the “hard nucleus” of the much larger, pre-existing service.<\/p>\n ***Update***<\/p>\n It’s been noted before that the “hard nucleus” line is cribbed right from President Reagan, who told it as a joke.
