A Virginia Beach now former Marine whose legal case drew national attention because of its focusing on mental health and sexual assault issues has been released.
\nUnder a plea agreement finalized last week, the Marine Corps dropped an attempted murder charge that stemmed from a domestic incident last April in Virginia Beach. She was released from the Navy brig in Chesapeake where she\u2019d been held since June.
\nShe has been sentenced to time served, a reduction in rank to E-1 and a Big Chicken Dinner, which has been suspended for six months. <\/p>\n

Thae Ohu from the brig is over, but her family says their fight for justice isn’t.<\/p>\n Ohu was released under a plea agreement last week after nearly a year in pretrial confinement at the Navy Consolidated Brig in Chesapeake, Va., on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and other offenses stemming from an April 2020 attack on her then-boyfriend. The attempted murder charges were dropped as part of the deal.<\/p>\n The 27-year-old’s case drew widespread attention last year after her family publicly called for the Marine Corps to release her into mental health treatment, saying the assault came amid a psychological breakdown.<\/p>\n Ohu had suffered severe post-traumatic stress disorder and other issues since she was raped by a Marine supervisor in Japan five years ago, her advocates said.<\/p>\n “Although we cannot and will not overlook the failures of the United States Marine Corps and DamNeck leadership, we are overjoyed Thae is released from their toxic control,” the family said in a statement on the website Justice for Thae Ohu.<\/p>\n Ohu had been assigned to the Marine Corps Intelligence Schools at Dam Neck Naval Base in Virginia.<\/p>\n Advocates for rape survivors and others have criticized Ohu’s treatment as emblematic of the military’s mishandling of sexual assault and mental health issues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n I’m a bit vague on what all an alleged rape five years ago has to do with a plea bargain on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, etc. If there is any lesson here, it’s get a good lawyer.
