Families are allowed to have more, but there’s a bit of back-pedaling going on by the population at large: having extra children interferes with the careers of Chinese workers, especially women who see themselves getting ahead.

This Reuters article discusses it pretty well.

https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-report-first-population-drop-five-decades-ft-2021-04-28/

There is not a lot of difference between the current parent generation in the USA and the same in China: having more than one or two children interferes with careers, especially for women.

From the article: A population drop will add pressure on Beijing to roll out measures to encourage couples to have more children and avert an irreversible decline.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which is due to release the results of the census conducted late last year in early April, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The population figure is very sensitive and will not be published until government departments have a consensus on the data and its implications, the Financial Times added on Tuesday, citing its sources.

“If China confirms such a decline, it would be a big deal,” said Zhiwei Zhang, the Shenzhen-based chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management. – article

China’s current census has the population at 1.4 billion, but it is slowly sliding backwards. The birth rate began to decline some time back, starting in the 1990s, and has continued as the generation now in the Chinese work force prefers career over kids. What may this mean down the road? The Chinese government’s ambitious plan to be Number One in everything may not come to pass, after all.

The Reuters article about the population decline makes it clear that, without replacing the losses in population, China’s ambitious plan to rule everything will be loss-fulL, rather than lossless.

Knocking down mosques in the Uighur state must be taking more time and attention than the government had anticipated.

China’s “one child per family” policy, instituted when Mao was in charge, is no longer in … <a title="China Is Losing….
