Federal health agencies called for an immediate pause in the use of Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine on Tuesday morning after six women, who received the vaccine, developed a rare blood clot disorder within two weeks of vaccination. This follows several patients at a mass vaccination site in North Carolina who suffered immediate reactions to the Johnson & Johnson shot. A day earlier, 11 people had adverse reactions in Denver, ranging from dizziness to nausea.<\/p>\n
“At this point we have no reason to believe there’s anything wrong with the vaccine itself,” said Dr. Shauna Gulley, a Centura Health chief clinical officer. “This is a temporary pause of one brand of vaccine so that we can investigate further.”<\/p>\n
The six vaccine recipients affected were between the ages of 18 and 48. One woman died and a second woman has been hospitalized in critical condition.<\/p>\n

Six people have developed a rare blood clot disorder after the vaccination.<\/em><\/p>\n By Jon Haworth<\/strong><\/p>\n The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday that they are calling for an immediate pause on the use of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine after discovering six cases in the United States of a rare and severe type of blood clot that developed about two weeks after the vaccine was administered in these patients.<\/p>\n “Safety is a top priority for the federal government,” acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock told reporters in a virtual news briefing, adding that while the blood clots were “extremely rare” the government was acting “out of an abundance of caution.”<\/p>\n “We are committed to patient safety,” Woodcock said, but encouraged Americans to continue to get vaccinated with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.<\/p>\n “[The] CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday to further review these cases and assess their potential significance,” read a joint CDC and FDA statement that was issued earlier on Tuesday morning. “[The] FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases. Until that process is complete, we are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution. This is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot.”<\/p>\n More than 6.8 million doses of the vaccine have already been administered in the United States.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n A minuscule fraction of the total to be sure, unless you or a loved one “wins” this particular lottery.
