Jury acquits Kuula; rules fatal stabbing was in self defense<\/strong><\/p>\n

A woman held in jail for more than a year after her arrest, was found not guilty on a charge of second-degree reckless homicide Friday, Feb. 19, after a five-day trial in Barron County Circuit Court.<\/p>\n

A 12-member jury deliberated for about four hours Friday afternoon before returning a not-guilty verdict in the trial of Melanie Kuula, 45, who had been charged in connection with the stabbing death of her 50-year-old boyfriend, Brett M. Bents, on Aug. 10, 2019, at an apartment building on Soo Avenue in Almena.<\/p>\n

The decision in the case is final and no further action is anticipated by prosecutors, according to District Attorney Brian Wright.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe jury found Ms. Kuula not guilty and that ends the matter,\u201d he said Monday, Feb. 22.<\/p>\n

Court records said the trial lasted much of the week, and didn\u2019t go to the jury until about noontime Friday, Feb. 19, following closing statements by Assistant District Attorney John O\u2019Boyle and defense attorney Ryan Raymond, public defender.<\/p>\n

Self-defense appeared to be the central argument of the case. Both closing statements revolved around whether or not the defendant committed the act out of fear for her own safety or should be held accountable for a \u201ccrime of passion,\u201d court records said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

UPDATE<\/span> Victim of burglary arrested after allegedly shooting, kidnapping 16-year-old suspected burglar<\/strong><\/p>\n

BATON ROUGE – Three 16-year-old juveniles are facing charges of vehicular burglary after a crime spree in a Baton Rouge apartment complex early Wednesday morning. One of the suspects was shot while attempting to break into a car.<\/p>\n

Representatives with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO) and the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) were among those who responded to the incident.<\/p>\n

According to an official record, BRPD officers were dispatched to Jennifer Jean Drive, as this area is in BRPD’s jurisdiction, and discovered a male teenager, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the torso.<\/p>\n

Officials say police rendered aid to the young man until emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and rushed the teen to an area hospital where he is in reportedly critical condition, but stable. <\/p>\n

Police reported seeing a man named Maurice Mark at the crime scene, sitting in a vehicle. According to the official report, police took Mark into custody for questioning.<\/p>\n

While interviewing Mark, police say he admitted to shooting the young man because the youth and an accomplice had been trying to burglarize his truck.<\/p>\n

Mark explained, according to an official report, that he was at his sister’s apartment, asleep, when a noise outside woke him up. Mark claimed he went to the window to investigate and saw two black males in ski masks breaking into his truck.<\/p>\n

So, Mark claimed he proceeded to arm himself with a handgun, go outside, and confront the burglars.<\/p>\n

While approaching them, Mark said he noticed one of them holding something that appeared to be a weapon, which Mark told police “could have been a screwdriver or tool.” But, in the heat of the moment, Mark feared the item was a handgun.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
