The US Postal Service is getting new rides. After an extensive procurement process, the USPS has elected to go with this design for its Next-Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV). Longtime defense vehicle contractor Oshkosh is the big winner. They’ll be building as many as 165,000 of these things, with both conventional powertrains and electric (naturally). The contract is worth about $5.7 Billion over the next ten years.<\/p>\n

I was curious how this compares with buying say a commercially available vehicle. $5.7 billion over 165,000 vehicles gives a cost of a little over $34,500 per vehicle. Not bad really. The MSRP of a similarly-sized commercial-off-the-shelf Sprinter van is $36,335. Now the Sprinters aren’t as ugly and with their German-engineered powerplants probably won’t start on fire as readily, but that 165k vehicle order could be completed in about a year if past production is any indication. Back in 2013-2014 Europe and North American Sprinter production totaled 135,000.<\/p>\n

The postal service talks up the amazing features of this new truck. Air conditioning! Backup camera! Blind spot sensors! Airbags!!! They are living in the world of tomorrow<\/del> 2008.<\/p>\n
