Canley<\/a>\u00a0fought off multiple attacks as his company moved into Hue City, the heaviest of urban\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/10\/01\/harrowing-tale-of-green-berets-vietnam-valor-drives-push-for-medal-of-honor\/\">fighting\u00a0<\/a>the Corps would see in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>After his commanding officer was severely wounded he took command and led the company into that hellscape. Over three days\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/hero\/4479\">Canley led attacks<\/a>\u00a0on multiple fortified positions, exposing himself repeatedly to enemy fire while carrying wounded Marines to safety.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, a half-century after those fateful days in 1968, Canley, then a retired sergeant major, was awarded the Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n<p>Marines headed to battle in the near future will carry his name with them as the Navy announced in mid-November that an Expeditionary Sea Base-6, or ESB-6, class ship will be named in his honor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSgt. Maj. Canley embodies the spirit of honor, courage and commitment,\u201d Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. David H. Berger said in a press release. \u201cSgt. Maj. Canley represents a generation of Marines who have sacrificed and fought for our way of life. His actions in Vietnam forever changed the lives of so many Marines around him. His legacy will continue to live on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"o-articleBody__text a-body1 element element-paragraph\">The ESB ship class is used through a range of military operations supporting multiple operational phases, similar to the Expeditionary Transfer Dock (ESD) class.\u00a0 As a mobile sea base, the ships are part of the critical access infrastructure that supports the deployment of forces and supplies to provide prepositioned equipment and sustainment with flexible distribution, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/Press-Releases\/display-pressreleases\/Article\/2410749\/secnav-names-future-expeditionary-sea-base-uss-john-l-canley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Navy statement<\/a>.\u00a0 &#8211; article<\/p>\n<div class=\"o-articleBody__signupForm a-fullBleed--at-small a-fullBleed--at-xs a-fullBleed--at-medium a-inset --size-s a-greyBox --grey-50 container signup newsletter\">\n<div class=\"o-newsletterSignUp newsletter-subscribe\">\n<div class=\"o-newsletterSignUp__thankYou\">\n<p>Kudos to Sergeant Major Canley.
