The author and his family live in Germany. The things he\u2019s describing \u2013 renewables, electric grid, power shutoffs \u2013 have been going on for some time, but this is the first time this kind of massive weather threat has shown up on the news. Combine the lockdowns for Covid-19 and not being prepared for truly foul weather, and you have a major disaster sitting in the wings.<\/p>\n

Since my own electricity went down this morning, in the middle of a harsh winter where the birds are waiting impatiently for me to put food out for them, it is nice to be able to text the power company immediately and get some results. That is NOT going to be quite so easy in Europe, if the weather map in the article is even vaguely accurate. We\u2018ve had heavy snows here in my kingdom \u2013 not unusual \u2013 but the cold is the real problem and when there is a power outage and no wood-burning fireplace for heat and cooking, you\u2019re in deep trouble.<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s this one: a proposal in the UK that allows the utilities to switch off power with no warning or justification and no compensation, even if your bill is paid. It\u2019s Boris Johnson\u2019s idea of a good time to let the peasants freeze and rot to death. How Henry II can you get????<\/p>\n

This one involves installing “smart” meters that tell the utility how much gas or electric power you use.\u00a0 The proposal in the article is that the utility will arbitrarily shut off your use of electricity. Why any government might think this is a good idea is inexplicable, especially since not everyone in the modern world has a fireplace to use for heat and cooking these days.<\/p>\n

This is precisely the direction<\/em> AOC and Bernie and their ilk want to take the rest of us. You think I\u2019m kidding? You\u2019re in the middle of a shower and the pump shuts off, which shuts off your water flow, because ELECTRIC\u00a0 NETWORK SHUTDOWN ORDERED for no reason, and it has nothing to do with being up to date on your bill. You’re cooking dinner on the stove and the gas flow is cut off because GAS ALLOWANCE SHUTDOWN ORDERED, for no reason, even if you’re up to date.<\/p>\n
