This doesn’t look like a third world dictatorship at all, does it? For the party that has been harping about “demilitarizing” the police, they sure seem to want to militarize<\/em> the election.<\/p>\n

Jeff LPH 3 sends in two related articles. First, Military Times points<\/a> out how the halls of the Capitol are teeming with National Guardsmen, in stark contrast to the schoolchildren, constituents, and other tourists normally stalking the halls of the People’s House.<\/p>\n

As House lawmakers held a historic impeachment vote on Wednesday, they did so not with members of the general public in the viewing galleries above but instead with National Guard troops patrolling the nearby hallways of the Capitol building.<\/p>\n

The scene \u2014 which came just one week after hundreds of rioters attacked the building in a bid to preserve Donald Trump\u2019s hold on the presidency \u2014 for many was a jarring militarization of the center of American democracy.<\/p>\n

But, lawmakers said, it was also a necessary precaution given the previous violence and ongoing threats to the Capitol complex.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe attack on the Capitol was a violent insurrection that resulted in the spilling of American blood,\u201d Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said in response to reporters\u2019 questions about the military security presence. \u201cOfficers were brutally beaten. The attackers wanted to assassinate Nancy Pelosi, hang Mike Pence, and hunt down sitting members of Congress.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Those who stormed the Capitol last week were clearly in the wrong. Everyone can agree with that. The assaults against police officers were unconscionable and inexcusable. I do think Mr. Jeffries is playing up the threat to himself a wee bit. The attackers seemed more interested in being disruptive, stealing Pelosi’s podium, or posing behind her desk.<\/p>\n

In related news<\/a>, the Guardsmen in the nation’s Capitol are permitted to be armed. This is an unusual move. Also from Military Times,<\/p>\n

There are now as many as 20,000 troops from around the country who have been authorized to assist local and federal law enforcement in the days leading up to President-elect Joe Biden\u2019s Jan. 20 inauguration, until into early February, some with firearms in hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was requested by federal authorities and authorized by the Secretary of the Army,\u201d according to a statement from NGB. \u201cNational Guard members are postured to meet the requirements of the supported civil authorities, up to and including protective equipment and being armed if necessary.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We’re up to 20,000 troops in or coming to D.C. That’s more than twice as many troops as were involved in Operation Urgent Fury, the invasion of Grenada. Twenty thousand is about how many troops were used in Operation Just Cause, when we invaded Panama!<\/p>\n
