The 2015 deal was that the enrichment levels would stay well below 20%. It’s only a short step from there to the 90% level that can produce a nuclear weapon, however low-yield that might be.

https://www.khon2.com/international/iran-tells-inspectors-it-plans-up-to-20-enrichment-at-fordo/

The Iranian government wants to have two nuclear missiles in its possession before long. If you recall that missile that blew itself up on the launch pad before it could even lift off, then you know we’re not talking about small stuff these days. The fact that this program has upset Iran’s Israeli neighbors matters little to the government of Iran.

From the article: DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran said Saturday it plans to enrich uranium up to 20% at its underground Fordo nuclear facility “as soon as possible,” pushing its program a technical step away from weapons-grade levels as it increases pressure on the West over the tattered atomic deal.

The move comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. in the waning days of the administration of President Donald Trump, who unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s nuclear deal in 2018.

That set in motion an escalating series of incidents capped by a U.S. drone strike that killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad a year ago, an anniversary coming Sunday that has American officials now worried about possible retaliation by Iran.

Iran’s decision to begin enriching to 20% a decade ago nearly brought an Israeli strike targeting its nuclear facilities, tensions that only abated with the 2015 atomic deal. A resumption of 20% enrichment could see that brinksmanship return. – article

But wait! That’s not all! The Tehran government has also directed its “navy” to seize a South Korean tanker MT Hankuk Chemi in the Straits of Hormuz, as a bargaining chip to get Seoul to release its assets being held in a bank in Seoul. https://apnews.com/article/iran-underground-nuclear-facility-d9809b8a61f71f87dff31da6ff784687

The plan was to have a South Korean diplomat meet with the Iranian government to discuss releasing those funds currently held by Seoul. Now? Well, it appears that Iran, with its underground nuke fuel processing plant at Fordo capable of boosting the level to 90% enrichment, is just itching for a chance to have a brawl with someone.

In addition, at the Fordo facility, there appears to be some heavy-duty, but undefined, construction going on, as well as at the Natanz site. https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-donald-trump-dubai-iran-iran-nuclear-2f6574ec6585a928e1417c184dbf5f65

From the article: Trump in 2018 unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from the JCPOA deal Iran, in which Tehran agreed to limit its uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. When the U.S. ramped up sanctions, Iran gradually and publicly abandoned those limits as a series of escalating incidents pushed the two countries to the brink of war at the beginning of the year.

Iran now enriches uranium to up to 4.5% purity, and according to the last IAEA report, had a stockpile of 2,105 kilograms (2.32 tons). Experts typically say 1,050 kilograms (1.15 tons) of low-enriched uranium is enough material to be re-enriched up to weapons-grade levels of 90% purity for one nuclear weapon. – article

Well, it’s a New Year, isn’t it?
