Fang Fang, or Christine Fang, was reportedly an intelligence operative with China\u2019s Ministry of State Security. She operated in California’s Bay Area from 2011 to 2015, where she used campaign fundraising, networking, her charm and romantic relationships to get close with politicians. <\/p>\n
She developed substantial ties with California law makers as part of a political operation to influence US political groups.<\/p>\n

Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian, Zach Dorfman<\/strong><\/p>\n A suspected Chinese intelligence operative developed extensive ties with local and national politicians, including a U.S. congressman, in what U.S. officials believe was a political intelligence operation run by China\u2019s main civilian spy agency between 2011 and 2015, Axios found in a yearlong investigation.<\/p>\n Why it matters: The alleged operation offers a rare window into how Beijing has tried to gain access to and influence U.S. political circles.<\/p>\n While this suspected operative\u2019s activities appear to have ended during the Obama administration, concerns about Beijing’s influence operations have spanned President Trump\u2019s time in office and will continue to be a core focus for U.S. counterintelligence during the Biden administration.<\/p>\n The woman at the center of the operation, a Chinese national named Fang Fang or Christine Fang, targeted up-and-coming local politicians in the Bay Area and across the country who had the potential to make it big on the national stage.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n This one got away, but China continues to conduct sophisticated espionage and influence operations to affect US policy.
