After thorough consideration, the Navy has decided to decommission USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, due to the extensive damage sustained during the July fire.<\/p>\n

To rebuild and repair the 22-year-old Gator-Freighter would have cost between $2.5 and $3.2 billion, and would have taken up to seven years, he said.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Navy will not repair the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard, which burned for more than four days this summer in San Diego.<\/p>\n

In the end, resurrecting the devastated large-deck amphib would have been too costly, Rear Adm. Eric Ver Hage, commander of the Navy Regional Maintenance Center, told reporters Monday.<\/p>\n

The extensive damage to the flattop\u2019s flight deck, island, mast and lower levels from the July 12 inferno would have required about 60 percent of the ship to be replaced, Ver Hage said.<\/p>\n

To rebuild and repair the 22-year-old amphib would have cost between $2.5 billion and $3.2 billion, and would have taken five to seven years, he said.<\/p>\n

To turn the stricken amphib into a hospital ship would have cost more than $1 billion and taken the same amount of time, he said.<\/p>\n

By contrast, decommissioning the ship will cost roughly $30 million and will be implemented over the next nine to 12 months, Ver Hage said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ver Hage also declined to comment Monday on the status of other ongoing investigations.<\/p>\n

The first BonHomme Richard was commanded by Capt. John Paul Jones. Both became known for their defeat of the English warship HMS Serapis at the Battle of Flamborough Head off the coast of England. The BonHomme Richard was gravely damaged and its flag knocked to the deck, when the English asked Jones whether he surrendered.<\/p>\n

Jones responded by calling out, “I have not yet begun to fight!” He then sent 40 Marines and sailors to the Serapis with grenades and muskets. The BonHomme Richard then secured America’s first defeat of an English vessel in English waters before ultimately sinking in September 1779.<\/p>\n
