The thugs also tied a rope to the statue and attempted to topple it by pulling it with a car.

A statue of former president William McKinley was vandalized Wednesday morning at McKinley Park on the Southwest Side.

About 4 a.m., someone threw a rope around the statue in the 3700 block of South Archer Avenue, according to Chicago police. The rope was attached to a car in an attempt to bring down the statue, police said.

The statue was also spray-painted with graffiti, police said. No arrest has been announced.

The would-be felons lack good grammar or penmanship, so it’s hard to know precisely just what their beef is with McKinley. On one side they painted “#Land Back” and on the other they painted “Decolonize Chicago [unintelligible]”. Their lack of foresight is clear when they can’t write “Decolonize” in the ample space provided on the large pedestal in one line.

McKinley, president from 1897 until when he was assassinated in 1901, joins a list of once revered U.S. figures who are now criticized for advancing white supremacy or being silent about attacks on Black Americans and Indigenous people.

Installed in 1905, the statue was cast with bronze from a melted statue of Christopher Columbus in Grant Park, according to the city’s website.

Over the summer, the city cited “public safety concerns” as it removed its three remaining Columbus statues after they drew ire from protestors. The statues were removed “temporarily” by the city, but people have called for them to be replaced by other figures.

The Columbus statue in Grant Park was the scene of a large clash between police and protesters in July that resulted in dozens of officers and demonstrators being injured.

Earlier this year, vandals targeted a McKinley monument in Buffalo, New York.

For those who don’t remember all the details of President McKinley and are searching their memories for just what makes him a figure of evil to these people, here are the highlights;

McKinley grew up in Ohio in a strict Methodist family that was, due to their religious beliefs, staunchly abolitionist in the antebellum years. When the War Between the States started, he enlisted as a private in the 23rd Ohio Infantry. After seeing battle at Carnifax Ferry he served as the brigade commissary sergeant. He served under fellow future Republican president Rutherford B Hayes, another staunch abolitionist who, as a lawyer pre-war, had defended escaped slaves in court. Hayes would become McKinley’s mentor.

After participating in the Battle of South Mountain and the bloody Battle of Antietam McKinley was commissioned a second lieutenant in reward for his service at Antietam. Before wars end he would be promoted to captain and given a brevet promotion to major. Brevet promotions for officers were either given for exceptionally meritorious service or for combat bravery.

He became a lawyer and politician after the war, serving in Congress and as Governor of Ohio. He would go on to be elected President of the United States in 1896. This put him in charge when the USS Maine exploded, sending the country to war with Spain. After victory over the Spanish Empire and territorial gains, McKinley was again tested when the Boxer Rebellion threatened to harm American (and other) diplomats and their families in China.

Winning re-election in 1900 he was assassinated the following year. He’s regarded as an above average president, though his popularity was overshadowed by his successor, the indomitable Teddy Roosevelt.

Again, the education system has clearly failed these petulant children.

The KoB sends in word of the latest target of leftist terrorists; President William McKinley.
