Former U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill on Thursday tried to explain why the party had lost some of its voters in the 2020 election, and therefore Congressional seats in the election.<\/p>\n
McCaskill served as a U.S. senator from Missouri from 2007 to 2019. She ran for a third term in 2018, but lost by a narrow margin to Republican candidate Josh Hawley, who had previously served as the state’s attorney general.<\/p>\n
The Senator blamed the divide “began around cultural issues.”<\/p>\n
“Whether you are talking guns or issues surrounding the right to abortion in this country or things like gay marriage and the right for transsexuals and other people who we as a party have tried to ‘look after’ and make sure that they’re treated fairly,” she said. “As we circled those issues we left some voters behind and Republicans dove in with a vengeance and grabbed those voters.”<\/p>\n
Other members of Congress said liberal catchphrases like “defund the police” hurt more moderate representatives in their reelection races. They complained that Republicans were able to tie them to “socialism” because of the party’s more left-wing members.<\/p>\n

Democrats had their majority cut in the House<\/strong><\/em> Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, pushed back against fellow Democrats blaming their losses in the House of Representatives on left-wing politicians and policies like the Green New Deal, saying that there was no \u201ccompelling evidence\u201d for that line of attack.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are folks running around on TV blaming progressivism for Dem underperformance,\u201d she tweeted.<\/p>\n She said that she looked at those candidates who are blaming progressives and found that \u201calmost all had awful execution on digital. DURING A PANDEMIC.\u201d<\/p>\n Democrats had hoped to expand their majority in the House, but instead they saw that majority cut and Republicans come closer to potentially taking the chamber.<\/p>\n Democratic members of Congress sounded the alarm during a caucus call on Thursday, arguing that progressive policy ideas like “defund the police” and the Green New Deal were detrimental to their performance in elections.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., said if \u201cwe are going to run on Medicare for All, defund the police, socialized medicine, we’re not going to win,” his office confirmed.<\/p>\n But AOC, perhaps the most well-known and influential member of the left-wing flank of House Democrats, claimed that Democratic incumbents in swing states who sponsored items like the Green New Deal and Medicare-for-all won reelection.<\/p>\n \u201cSo the whole ‘progressivism is bad’ argument just doesn\u2019t have any compelling evidence that I\u2019ve seen.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n And there you have it. The lackluster performance of the Congressional Democrats cannot possibly be due to the hard left, socialist issues that were rammed down America’s throats this entire campaign cycle. AOC says so.
