From the Washington Post, Trump’s dismissed Putin’s offer of extending the New START nuclear arms control treaty. Trump has criticized the treaty before as unfair. New START required a 36% reduction on deployed ICBMs, SLBMs, and deployed bombers for Russia but a 43% reduction for the US. Similarly, for warheads on those platforms, Russia reduced their numbers 63% while the US reduced their number by 75%. Tactical nukes, of which Russia has a large number, were unaffected by the treaty.<\/p>\n

The treaty also didn’t involve China, which the US now sees as a long term strategic adversary.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration rejected a proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin for a one-year extension of a critical nuclear arms-control treaty Friday, dimming the chances of a diplomatic breakthrough before the Nov. 3 U.S. presidential election.<\/p>\n

Putin offered to extend New START, a 10-year treaty that places limits on the two countries\u2019 nuclear warheads, without preconditions at a meeting of his security council, but national security adviser Robert C. O\u2019Brien called the proposal a \u201cnon-starter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that Russia will reevaluate its position before a costly arms race ensues,\u201d O\u2019Brien said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The breakdown in negotiations comes as President Trump, trailing Democratic rival Joe Biden in national polling, urges his diplomats to bring him foreign policy victories.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That last bit to me says that Trump isn’t taking the easy foreign policy “win” by extending the treaty. I’m sure Trump’s opponents would accuse Trump of just giving Putin what he wants if Trump did give him the extension. More at the source, if you want to read the far-left Washington Post.<\/p>\n
