{"id":105164,"date":"2020-09-17T10:23:22","date_gmt":"2020-09-17T14:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=105164"},"modified":"2020-09-17T12:34:44","modified_gmt":"2020-09-17T16:34:44","slug":"the-nfl-and-awaaay-we-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=105164","title":{"rendered":"The NFL&#8230; And AWAAAY We Go!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/villanueva.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-105165 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/villanueva.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/villanueva.jpg 486w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/villanueva-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/villanueva-465x333.jpg 465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We posted recently about the NFL wading into the political controversy surrounding people killed by police.\u00a0 My premise was that it was a slippery slope.\u00a0 You are handing control over someone&#8217;s stance, or perceived lack thereof, to outside forces and it can only go badly.<\/p>\n<p>One case was with Pittsburgh offensive tackle Al Villanueva, who chose to wear the name of Army Sgt 1st Class Alwyn Cashe&#8217;s name on his helmet.\u00a0 \u00a0This was a departure from the rest of his teammates, who elected to wear the name &#8220;Antwon Rose Jr.&#8221; who was killed in Pittsburg.<\/p>\n<p>Although not on the &#8220;Approved List,&#8221; Villanueva felt strongly about wearing Cashe&#8217;s name and now he is paying the price.\u00a0 He cleared this move with Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin and Tomlin supported Villanueva&#8217;s right to individual expression.<\/p>\n<p>Villanueva graduated from West Point and was an Army Ranger who was awarded a Bronze Star from actions in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/29898200\/al-villanueva-changes-name-helmet-dead-black-soldier-surprising-pittsburgh-steelers-teammates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Al Villanueva&#8217;s helmet change catches Pittsburgh Steelers teammates by surprise<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>PITTSBURGH &#8212; The Pittsburgh Steelers chose to wear the name of Antwon Rose Jr., a Black teenager killed by East Pittsburgh police in 2018, on the backs of their helmets for the entire 2020 season &#8212; but one player had a different name on his helmet Monday night, which came as a surprise to some teammates.<\/p>\n<p>Offensive lineman Al Villanueva changed the name on his helmet to that of Army Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe, a Black soldier who was killed on duty in Iraq and was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for heroism.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/cashe-helmet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-105166\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/cashe-helmet-447x333.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"447\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/cashe-helmet-447x333.jpg 447w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/cashe-helmet-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/cashe-helmet.jpg 505w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, Antwon Rose Jr&#8217;s mother weighed in&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m going to use this negative press and negativity to motivate me to hold the Pittsburgh Steelers even more accountable!!! Yes I believe in second chances but as we all know I believe in putting in the work and that&#8217;s how I base my collaborations. They came to me as a team\/organization and I don&#8217;t care how good of an individual you are; if you are not a TEAM player then maybe you are playing for the wrong team!!!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To be honest, I did not know the story of Antwon Rose Jr and looked it up.\u00a0 Perhaps wearing the name served its purpose with me in that I read up on it and he has not been forgotten.\u00a0 Rose sounds like he was in the wrong place at the wrong time but happened to run with a bad crowd &#8211; at least on the day of his death.\u00a0 He fled from the scene of an arrest and was shot by a police officer.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know much beyond that as far as his innocence or potential guilt &#8211; but I&#8217;m not here to litigate individuals cases.<\/p>\n<p>Then, we have the case of Miami Dolphin&#8217;s safety Eric Rowe who chose to wear the name of slain Texas soldier Vanessa Guillen.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/sports\/2020\/09\/13\/nfl-player-will-wear-vanessa-guillens-name-on-helmet-for-sundays-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>NFL player will wear Vanessa Guillen\u2019s name on helmet for Sunday\u2019s game<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One NFL player is honoring the legacy of slain Texas soldier Vanessa Guillen both on and off the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Miami Dolphins&#8217; safety Eric Rowe will wear Guillen\u2019s name on his helmet during Sunday\u2019s game against the New England Patriots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The football team posted the announcement on Twitter Sunday, Sept. 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Guillen, 20, was an Army specialist stationed at Fort Hood who disappeared in April.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, we have the case of Jacksonville Jaguars&#8217; tight end Tyler Eifert who chose to wear the name of fallen retired St. Louis police officer David Dorn.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmov.com\/news\/nfl-player-honors-david-dorn-on-his-helmet\/article_742fc4b4-f6a0-11ea-b63f-fbf4c7b90627.html\"><strong>NFL player honors David Dorn on his helmet<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
