Notorious racist George Washington<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) convened a panel of 34 people<\/a> back in July to look at public structures named after people to see if their brand of revisionist history could be employed.<\/p>\n

Mayor Bowser charged the\u00a0District of Columbia Facilities and Commemorative Expressions (DCFACES) Working Group<\/strong>\u00a0with evaluating named DC Government-owned facilities and make recommendations as to what, if any, actions need to be taken if the person the facility is named for is inconsistent with DC values and in some way encouraged the oppression of African Americans and other communities of color or contributed to our long history of systemic racism.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Well, the DCFECES working group has come back with their final report. They’ve discovered 153 of the 1,330 places, streets, or structures in the district to be related to “persons of concern.”<\/p>\n

Nine locations they want to be “removed, relocated, or contextualized.” From the report;<\/p>\n

Using the Mayor\u2019s position on the National Capital Memorial Advisory Commission, [to] recommend the Federal government remove, relocate, or contextualize the following assets:<\/p>\n

1. Christopher Columbus \u2013 Columbus Fountain (federal)
\n2. Benjamin Franklin \u2013 Benjamin Franklin Statue (federal)
\n3. Andrew Jackson \u2013 Andrew Jackson Statue (federal)
\n4. Thomas Jefferson \u2013 Jefferson Memorial (federal)
\n5. George Mason \u2013 George Mason Memorial (federal)
\n6. Francis Griffith Newlands \u2013 Newlands Memorial Fountain (federal)
\n7. Albert Pike \u2013 Albert Pike Statue (federal)
