The racist stone<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

There’s a stone marker in Missouri that’s drawing the usual revisionist history folks that want to forget our past so we can repeat it. This marker doesn’t even commemorate a battle, celebrate a Confederate general, or anything of the sort.<\/p>\n

The Jefferson City Racial Equity Group, the NAACP, and some residents are against the marker. What has them all fired up?<\/p>\n

The marker is a large brown stone on a gray stone base, bearing a plaque which reads “Deciding against attack, the Confederate Army under Gen. Sterling Price turned from Jefferson City October 7, 1864.”<\/p>\n

In 1864, Confederate forces, led by Gen. Sterling Price, planned to attack Jefferson City in order to secure a possible victory and help turn the tide of the war, which at that point was leaning toward the Union, which eventually won.<\/p>\n

Price did not have his troops attack the city due to the strength of Union forces in the area, leading the event to be referred to as “the battle that never was.”<\/p>\n

The marker was dedicated April 6, 1933, by the Winnie Davis chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.<\/p>\n

Recently, conversations have begun about the future of the marker, with opinions ranging from removal or relocation to the possibility of additional historical markers to add context or leaving the stone alone all together.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I thought we had a serious problem with systemic racism in the country? Must have solved it if they’re reduced to bickering over a rock that commemorates an event that never happened.<\/p>\n
