Without hesitation, he helped rescue crewmembers trapped on USS Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>From the article:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<strong>USS Oklahoma<\/strong>\u00a0was tied up next to the\u00a0<strong>USS Maryland<\/strong>\u00a0when they were hit with at least\u00a0<strong>nine Japanese torpedoes<\/strong>, capsizing quickly with sailors trapped below deck.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Welch didn\u2019t hesitate to immediately move into action, cutting holes in the\u00a0<strong>USS Oklahoma<\/strong>, by utilizing blueprints to avoid cutting into a fuel void.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Welch\u2019s combat duty was damage control and repair, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/breaking-news\/hc-pearl-harbor-dedication-20181207-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Courant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With the help of other sailors, Welch helped pull survivors from the ship. &#8211; article<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">His rate (MOS to you landlubbers) was Electrician&#8217;s Mate.\u00a0 There is no reference to his rating (rank) at the time, but he was 20 years old when the bombing took place.
