\nA 79-year-old Army veteran and gun shop owner near Houston opened fire on burglars, hitting one who was found dead on a roadside about 10 miles away, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Raymond Balcerowicz, who lives on the same property where he runs both Central Guns and Central Barber Shop in Crosby, Texas, was jarred awake when burglars used a chain and their car to rip the gun shop door off at about 4:30 a.m., officials said.<\/p>\n

“As soon as he heard the commotion, most likely from the door being pulled, is when he came out, so he encountered them pretty quickly,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told reporters.<\/p>\n

The suspects opened fire before Balcerowicz took cover behind a tree and returned shots, hitting one of the burglars, officials said.<\/p>\n

“A lot of shots were fired. He’s very lucky he’s alive,” Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n

The suspects fled and several minutes later, a wounded man \u2014 later identified was one of the burglars \u2014 was found sitting outside a car in Baytown, about 10 miles away, officials said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Man shot while attempting to break into Detroit home, police said<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAn attempted home invasion suspect is in temporary serious condition after he was shot while trying to break into a Detroit home early Friday morning, police said.<\/p>\n

The incident happened around 1:15 a.m. in the 19700 block of Goddard on the city\u2019s east side, police said.<\/p>\n

According to police, a 49-year-old man was attempting to break in through the back door of a home when a 58-year-old man inside fired a shot, hitting the suspect.<\/p>\n

The suspect ran from the scene, but police detained him. He was taken to a hospital.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nCHANNELVIEW, Texas \u2014 Three men were killed in a shootout with a resident during an attempted home invasion in Channelview, the sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

The shooting was reported at about 10 a.m. Monday in the 1800 block of Amie Michele.<\/p>\n

Early reports from the Harris County Sheriff\u2019s Office indicated multiple men wearing dark clothing attempted to break into the home. One resident inside the home hid while another grabbed a shotgun and exchanged gunfire with the alleged home invaders.<\/p>\n

At least three suspects were shot, and all three died at the scene.<\/p>\n

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said other suspects may have also been involved in the crime before fleeing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

SURVEY: 27% OF HOUSEHOLDS WITH GUNS RECENTLY BOUGHT ONE<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nA recent national poll found that support for gun control is on the decline and more than one-in-four voters with a firearm in the household recently picked one up. <\/p>\n

The results of a Rasmussen phone poll of likely voters published last week found that 27 percent of those with guns in the house purchased one within the past six months. Likewise, the survey found that support for more restrictions on firearms has fallen from 64 percent just a year ago to 52 percent today. <\/p>\n

The survey complements separate polling recently commissioned by the National Shooting Sports Foundation among likely voters in 18 key battleground states that found 57 percent of respondents believed a ban on semi-automatic sporting rifles such as AR-15s would not be effective on reducing crime. Likewise, a survey by the NSSF of firearms retailers found as much as 40 percent of recent purchases have been to first-time buyers.<\/p>\n

In all, the trade group believes that more than 2.5 million new gun owners have been added to in a very short period of time. <\/p>\n

With so many Americans taking time to exercise their newly embraced right to keep and bear arms, NSSF is encouraging all gun owners to use its #GUNVOTE online resource to register to vote and receive election updates and candidate information in order to be more educated about the Second Amendment positions of political candidates.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
