TikTok\/Douyin is a Chinese video-sharing social networking service owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based Internet technology company founded in 2012. It is an app used to create short music, lip-sync, dance, comedy and talent videos of 3 to 15 seconds, and short looping videos of 3 to 60 seconds.<\/p>\n
The main concerns surrounding the app with an estimated 800 million users, about 60 percent of whom are between the ages of 16 and 24, are its ties to the Chinese government and the security and surveillance apprehensions that come with those ties.<\/p>\n
“Companies in China have to hand over any information at any time to the Chinese government,” Muneeb Ali, CEO of decentralized computing network and app ecosystem Blockstacks.<\/p>\n
TikTok has denied that it stores data in China and maintains that the CCP have never requested data from the social media company.<\/em><\/strong> President Trump issued an executive order Thursday night that would see the social media platform TikTok banned within 45 days.<\/p>\n TikTok is a video sharing mobile application, owned by ByteDance Ltd., that the Trump administration has deemed a national security threat on the basis that the app has been gathering data that could potentially be shared with the government of China.<\/p>\n \u201cTikTok automatically gathers vast swaths of information from its users, including internet and other network activity information such as location data and browsing and search history,\u201d the executive order said.<\/p>\n \u201cThis data threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) access to Americans\u2019 personal and propietrary information \u2013 potentially allowing China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information and blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage.\u201d<\/p>\n The U.S. ban puts pressure on the China-based company to sell the app\u2019s U.S. platform \u2013 Microsoft is reportedly a leading contender, but the deal will be closely monitored by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n “If Microsoft or any U.S. company buys TikTok this will be carefully monitored to make sure there is absolutely no Chinese involvement in the new company,” said one Wall Street executive with knowledge of the matter told Fox Business.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n “The United States must take aggressive action against the owner of WeChat to protect our national security,\u201d the executive order said Thursday night.<\/p>\n Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday: \u201cWe want to see untrusted Chinese apps removed from us app stores.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Read the entire article here: Breitbart<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
