Some good news is on the horizon: The US Navy has chosen Doris “Dorie” Miller, one of the guys who manned a gun at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese squadrons attacked and started sinking our ships, as the name for the next US Navy aircraft carrier.<\/p>\n
Even when African\u00a0Americans were denied the opportunity to serve in combat roles, they still found ways to distinguish themselves. Doris \u201cDorie\u201d Miller was a steward aboard the USS West Virginia during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Although he had never been trained on the ship\u2019s weapons, he manned a machine gun during the attack and carried wounded sailors to safety. For his actions, Miller became the first African\u00a0American to receive the Navy Cross. Following Dorie\u2019s actions and lobbying from civil rights groups, the US Navy increasingly sent black sailors to sea in combat roles. On March 20, 1944, the Navy commissioned the destroyer escort\u00a0USS Mason<\/em>, the first ship to have a predominantly black crew.<\/p>\n USS\u00a0Doris Miller<\/em>\u00a0(CVN-81)<\/strong>\u00a0is a future\u00a0Gerald R. Ford<\/em>-class<\/a>\u00a0aircraft carrier<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0United States Navy<\/a>.[3]<\/a>[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Doris Miller<\/em>\u00a0is scheduled to be\u00a0laid down<\/a>\u00a0in 2023,\u00a0launched<\/a>\u00a0in 2028 and\u00a0commissioned<\/a>\u00a0in 2030.
