The shooting death of a black Trump supporter in Milwaukee has state Republicans calling for a federal investigation.<\/p>\n

Bernell Trammell, 60, a dreadlocked activist known for carrying handmade signs through the streets reading \u201cVote Donald Trump 2020,\u201d and posting them on his storefront, was\u00a0gunned down by an unknown assailant\u00a0on his sidewalk Thursday afternoon, police said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of Trammell\u2019s well-known political activism and the possibility that his murder could be politically motivated, I respectfully request that United States Attorney Matthew Krueger open an investigation,\u201d\u00a0said Andrew Hitt, chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, late Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo American should fear for their personal safety because of where they live or their political affiliation,\u201d Hitt added.<\/p>\n

Krueger\u2019s spokesman, Kenneth Gales, said he could not comment on Hitt\u2019s request.<\/p>\n

Trammell was a familiar figure in Milwaukee\u2019s Riverwest neighborhood, frequently pedaling a bicycle or walking the streets with signs proclaiming his eclectic religious or political thoughts.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had a lot of different views,\u201d local writer Adebisi Agoro told The Post. \u201cBut it was his last view that made people be outrageous with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pro-Trump signage was stirring up angry posts on neighborhood Facebook pages, Agoro said. On Monday, a man followed Trammell around town holding a sign reading \u201cSike\u201d \u2014 local slang for \u201cnot!\u201d or \u201cas if\u201d \u2014 to counter it.<\/p>\n

Trammell \u201cdidn\u2019t have internet, he didn\u2019t have a phone, he didn\u2019t have a dime to his name,\u201d Agoro said. \u201cBut he got his message out.\u201d<\/p>\n

A new GOP outreach office \u2013 opened this year to try to make inroads into the African-American electorate \u2013 is just blocks from the building where Trammell lived and was killed, Hitt said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is personal,\u201d he told The Post.<\/p>\n

Hitt, a former Milwaukee prosecutor, turned to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin Friday, in the face of silence from the city\u2019s police department.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know how these investigations work,\u201d he said. \u201cThe lack of information is concerning. We don\u2019t know any of the circumstances of how he was murdered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police, who had no suspects in custody as of Friday, did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

But the Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention was aware of at least one public dispute over Trammell\u2019s Trump signs, the unit\u2019s director, Reggie Moore, toldthe Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a black elder who didn\u2019t deserve to die the way that he did,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, hours before Trammell\u2019s death, Agoro filmed an interview with him about his support for Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that Trump is the sign of the times,\u201d Trammell\u00a0said in the clip<\/a>, adding that Trump\u2019s\u00a0respect for rapper Kanye West\u00a0and former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman made him a worthy candidate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is going to be a motivating factor for us as we organize in central Milwaukee and across Wisconsin,\u201d Hitt said. \u201cI think it will give folks in the black community who support the president\u2019s message more resolve and more determination than ever.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
