FoxNews10<\/a> out of Phoenix is reporting that a bill has been submitted to Congress that will help curb bullying in the military.\u00a0 The bill was named after Navy sailor Brandon Caserta, who took his own life after joining the fleet once he did not make it through BUD\/S, which is prerequisite training to become a Navy SEAL.<\/p>\n

‘Brandon Act’ looks to help active duty service members report bullying without retaliation<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

PEORIA, Ariz.\u00a0–\u00a0<\/span>A\u00a0Peoria\u00a0family hopes their son\u2019s suicide in the\u00a0Navy\u00a0leads to some good for all men and women in uniform.<\/p>\n

A bill now in Congress, the Brandon Act, looks to give service members more options for mental health.<\/p>\n

Brandon Caserta wanted nothing more than to be a Navy\u00a0SEAL, but unfortunately, a broken leg derailed his dream, and following a transfer in the Navy, things got much worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was bullied and hazed from the moment he got in that command. I think he was targeted because he did not make it through the SEAL program,” said his mother\u00a0Teri Caserta.<\/p>\n

He took his own life in 2018 when he threw himself into the tail rotor of a helicopter. His parents live in\u00a0Peoria\u00a0and made it a mission to not let his death be in vain.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe left us a letter and it was detailed and he asked us to get justice for him, and we will get justice for him,” said\u00a0his father Patrick Caserta.<\/p>\n

Caserta\u2019s family said his chain of command ignored Brandon’s pleas for help.<\/p>\n

This is where the\u00a0Brandon Act\u00a0comes in. It was\u00a0introduced by Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt provides a way for service members to report any sort of hazing or abuse outside the chain of command if they need to\u00a0if\u00a0they fear any sort of retaliation from telling their commanders about what\u2019s going on,”\u00a0Moulton explained.<\/p>\n

While there are still many hurdles to clear,\u00a0the Caserta family hopes Brandon’s legacy will help those in the military who may need it most.<\/p>\n

\u201cActive duty that need help will get the help they need with no retaliation. It could be anything, hazing bullying, you name it, it covers it,” his father explained.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
