Several news outlets, including Newser<\/a>, have reported that a Frederick Douglass statue in Rochester New York has been vandalized.<\/p>\n

Frederick Douglass Statue Toppled<\/a><\/h2>\n

Abolitionist gave ‘What to the Slave is the Fourth of July’ speech in Rochester in 1852<\/em><\/p>\n

A statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass was ripped from its base in Rochester, NY, on the anniversary of one of his most famous speeches, delivered in that city in 1852. Police said the statue of Douglass was taken on Sunday from Maplewood Park, a site along the Underground Railroad where Douglas and Harriet Tubman helped shuttle slaves to freedom, the AP reports. The statue was found at the brink of the Genesee River gorge about 50 feet from its pedestal, police said. There was damage to the base and a finger.<\/p>\n

In Rochester on July 5, 1852, Douglass gave the speech \u201cWhat to the Slave is the Fourth of July,\u201d in which he called the celebration of liberty a sham in a nation that enslaves and oppresses its black citizens. To a slave, Douglass said, Independence Day is \u201ca day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.\u201d Carvin Eison, a leader of the project that brought the Douglass statue to the park, told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle<\/em> that another statue will take its place because the damage is too significant. “Is this some type of retaliation because of the national fever over confederate monuments right now? Very disappointing, it\u2019s beyond disappointing,\u201d Eison told\u00a0WROC.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

As with all statues being torn down, these actions are difficult to assign motives to.\u00a0 So it makes me wonder how Mr. Eison is quick to float the possibility that it is retaliation even though he poses it as a question.\u00a0 He may be right, but more importantly, he may be wrong.<\/p>\n

There was some speculation as to why the Ulysses S.\u00a0Grant<\/a> statue was torn down given Grant’s stand on slavery as well as his dedication to fighting for the Union.<\/p>\n

Then, what about the statue town down of abolitionist Hans Christian Heg<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Maybe the people that tore these statues down are not that good with history?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is all a terrible trend.\u00a0 My point in all of this is since the people tearing down the statues want to be anonymous, the motives for tearing them down also remain elusive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is why there should be petitions, discussions, and votes.\u00a0 This would put this all out in the open.\u00a0 Instead, when someone doesn’t get their way they impose their will on the rest of us.<\/p>\n
