The reply from Russia\u2019s Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) was actually quite bizarre. Read for yourself:<\/p>\n<h3>Russia denies nuclear incident following detection of isotopes in northern Europe<\/h3>\n<p><em>This article was originally published by Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty and is reprinted with permission.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Russia has denied any nuclear incidents after an international body detected unusual radioactive isotopes produced by nuclear fission in northern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Last week in Sweden, a station of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), which monitors the world for evidence of nuclear weapons tests, detected unexplained \u201chigher than usual levels\u201d of radioactive isotopes that likely came from somewhere around the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The CTBTO head, Lassina Zerbo, tweeted on June 26 that the elevated levels of three radionuclides generally associated with civil nuclear activities \u2014 cesium-134, cesium-137, and ruthenium-103 \u2014 had been detected on June 22-23.<\/p>\n<p>But the group also said later the same day that the levels it saw were \u201cnot harmful for human health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) said on June 29 that it had measured radiation levels after the CTBTO\u2019s report and all measurements \u201cindicated stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Rospotrebnadzor\u2019s press service stressed that Russia\u2019s executive bodies, monitoring the radiation situation, did not confirm the information in question.<\/p>\n<p>Kremlin spokesman Dimitry Peskov also said on June 29 that Russia\u2019s \u201cstate-of-the-art, modern radiation safety monitoring system\u201d had not registered any \u201cthreatening situations or emergencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosenergoatom, a unit of the state nuclear company Rosatom, said over the weekend that Russia\u2019s two northwest nuclear power plants, in the Leningrad region and Kola peninsula, were working normally and radiation levels were unchanged.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well there you have it.
