They were proud of their cousin Lillian Richard and want her image kept on the bottle instead of rebranding it, and they do NOT want that history erased.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/family-of-woman-portrayed-as-aunt-jemima-opposes-rebrand-saying-we-do-not-want-that-history-erased-2020-06-22\">https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/family-of-woman-portrayed-as-aunt-jemima-opposes-rebrand-saying-we-do-not-want-that-history-erased-2020-06-22<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This link has what I think is a photograph of Lillian Richard**, one of the models for the Aunt Jemima brand label.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkyt.com\/2020\/06\/21\/family-of-woman-who-portrayed-aunt-jemima-opposes-move-to-change-brand\/\">https:\/\/www.wkyt.com\/2020\/06\/21\/family-of-woman-who-portrayed-aunt-jemima-opposes-move-to-change-brand\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As one of her relatives says, she made a living and supported her family in a time when it was hard for women, never mind black women, to find paying work.<\/p>\n<p>And now, it\u2019s two families protesting the rebranding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/food\/2020\/06\/21\/aunt-jemima-changes-quaker-oats-racial-stereotypes\/3233423001\/\">https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/food\/2020\/06\/21\/aunt-jemima-changes-quaker-oats-racial-stereotypes\/3233423001\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the article:\u00a0 Two families of women who portrayed Aunt Jemima\u00a0say they oppose Quaker Oats&#8217; plans to rename the brand of\u00a0syrup and pancake mixes and change the iconic figure.<\/p>\n<p>Quaker Oats announced last week it would retire\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2020\/06\/17\/aunt-jemima-reportedly-change-name-remove-image-black-woman\/3204562001\/\">Aunt Jemima<\/a>\u00a0because it&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;based on a racial stereotype,&#8221; saying its prior work to update the character was &#8220;not enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The move,\u00a0considered long overdue by experts, historians and some consumers,\u00a0was the first in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2020\/06\/19\/racism-racial-stereotypes-changing-aunt-jemima-uncle-bens-eskimo-pie\/3204929001\/\">series of rebranding announcements<\/a>\u00a0that grew to include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/food\/2020\/06\/17\/uncle-bens-rice-change-brand-identity-racial-equality\/3205859001\/\">Uncle Ben&#8217;s<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/food\/2020\/06\/17\/mrs-butterworths-syrup-packaging-review-aunt-jemima-racial-bias\/3209566001\/\">Mrs. Butterworth&#8217;s<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/food\/2020\/06\/18\/cream-of-wheat-packaging-chef-immediate-review-racial-stereotypes\/3212448001\/\">Cream of Wheat<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2020\/06\/19\/racism-racial-stereotypes-changing-aunt-jemima-uncle-bens-eskimo-pie\/3204929001\/\">Eskimo Pie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first Aunt Jemima image was based on Kentucky native\u00a0Nancy Green, a Civil War-era slave from Mount Sterling, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37P3gGV\">Louisville Courier-Journal<\/a>, part of the USA TODAY Network.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, Aunt Jemima was shown with a wide smile and wearing a bandanna in her hair, an image that faced criticism for years as it was accused of encouraging racist stereotypes. In 1989, the image was revamped, with the new model wearing pearl earrings with straightened curls.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Short Harrington is believed to be the model after Green.<\/p>\n<p>Larnell Evans Sr., Harrington&#8217;s great-grandson,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/chicago\/aunt-jemimas-great-grandson-enraged-her-legacy-vanishing?fbclid=IwAR3woyP4vrEo8rmSNuexxCBqEMyX9KgjMK-W1aM_6ivc5v9tQa7Aia_g17I\">told Patch<\/a>\u00a0that he was hurt and offended by the brand\u2019s decision. \u2013 article<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, the PC stuff simply goes too far and the people who engage in it look even stupider than usual.
